COLLEGE BASKETBALL — March 27
NCAA Tournament @ Phoenix
WESTERN KENTUCKY (+12) vs. UCLA (Total 133) — Western Kentucky certainly proved itself in the overtime win over Drake. And Courtney Lee is establishing himself as a star, with 29 points against San Diego. The Hilltoppers are reliant on their guards, that’s for sure, and while Ty Rogers was able to provide a great shadow for San Diego’s Brandon Johnson in the previous round, it’s going to be quite a different story doing that against cat-quick Darren Collison, up there with the best point guards in the nation. And Lee will encounter considerable resistance from Russell Westbrook, the Pac-10 defensive player of the year. Luc Richard Mbah a Moute, who had six turnovers against Texas A&M in the previous round, should be sharper with a game under his belt. And Kevin Love, who had eight blocks against the Aggies, can exert control in the lane. Will UCLA, which got an unexpected scare in the two-point win against A&M, look for more comfort this time? We think so. After all, Ben Howland’s team has played “lockdown” with plenty of opponents before in this tournament, and by and large, the Bruins have seen this big a stage before. The Sun Belt champs certainly deserve to be here, but this is where the road ends.
