COLLEGE BASKETBALL — April 1

NIT Semifinals @ New York
OLE MISS (+2) vs. OHIO STATE (Total 141) — This is a very competitive matchup on paper, with both teams coming in with a full head of steam and having defeated credible, NCAA-caliber opponents in getting here (Ohio State over Dayton, Ole Miss over Virginia Tech). And Ole Miss may find itself with some more muscle on the inside with Dwayne Curtis and Kenny Williams. But OSU possesses the more versatile big man in Kost Koufos, a finesse player who has shot 70% thus far in the NIT, and the Buckeyes also have a shot-blocking component the Rebels can’t match, as Koufos and Othello Hunter combine for over three blocks a game. Jamar Butler has a hot hand, with 20 or more points in four of his last six games. And Ohio State has shot 50% or better in every game of the tourney. Sure, we recognize that Ole Miss has not yet lost outside the SEC, but the Buckeyes, who have done a great job in rebuilding from last year’s national runner-up, maintained some of their defensive potency (38.5% FG allowed), even without Greg Oden, which is a credit to coach Thad Matta.
