COLLEGE BASKETBALL — March 28
NCAA Tournament @ Houston
MICHIGAN STATE (+4.5) vs. MEMPHIS (Total 136) — Michigan State has started to look somewhat like the kind of team Tom Izzo is used to bringing into the Big Dance, as they have gathered momentum to present a much different face than they did down the Big ten regular season stretch. Drew Neitzel is looking good right now; he had 28 and 26-point performances in the Big Ten tourney and had 21 as the Spartans beat Pittsburgh. Do not expect Michigan State to be muscled on the boards against a Memphis front line that often gets into foul trouble - Joey Dorsey in particular. No one can doubt that Memphis has great depth and speed and can really get down the court in a hurry, and Michigan State will strain itself to bring the tempo down. But any success on their part will be a bonus, and Memphis is going to be hard-pressed to extend any advantages as long as they can not convert from the charity stripe; indeed, the Tigers have hit less than 54% of their free throws, and that can spell disaster down the stretch of a game that is “shortened” by a skilled opponent.
