COLLEGE BASKETBALL — March 29
NCAA Tournament @ Charlotte - East Regional
LOUISVILLE (+5.5) vs. NORTH CAROLINA (Total 154.5) — The North Carolina Tar Heels have looked downright scary in this tournament, haven’t they? After all, they scored more than 100 points in each of their first two games and then went into half-court mode to beat Washington State at their own game. And they took a 15-point lead the half against the Cougars despite the fact that Tyler Hansbrough had only scored two points, which is REALLY scary. Ty Lawson has better than a 2-to-1 ratio of assists to turnovers, and Wayne Ellington is perfectly capable of busting loose for 20 points or more. There is depth, there is speed, and if Louisville applies the defensive pressure, that might actually play right into what North Carolina wants to do. But Louisville coach Rick Pitino, who is now 35-11 in the NCAA tournament, can go the other way, slowing down the Tar Heel offense with a halfcourt zone. And unlike most teams that line up against North Carolina, the Cardinals can throw multiple big people at Hansbrough, including David Padgett, Juan Palacios and Derrick Caracter. There is so much great ball movement too on the Louisville side, as Padgett, out of the pivot, and small forward Terrence Williams are better passers than are normally seen at their positions. these guys will make Hansbrough work on the defensive end, that’s for sure. But there is enough depth and enough athletes on the Louisville side to compete every step of the way. And they’ve got arguably more people with more ways to score, including Earl Clark, who came off the bench to score 17 points with 12 rebounds on Thursday. And who’s to say Louisville hasn’t been even more impressive in this tournament - first shutting down the three-point game of Boise State, the top shooting team in the country, then scoring wins of 30 points over Oklahoma and 19 over Tennessee.
