COLLEGE BASKETBALL — March 30
NCAA Tournament @ Detroit - Midwest Regional final
DAVIDSON (+9) vs. KANSAS (Total 144.5) — When you look at this matchup on paper, Davidson doesn’t figure to compete, because they don’t have the same kind of muscle up front, depth or speed that Kansas possesses. But when you consider the Wildcats have been so competitive with the likes of UCLA, Duke and North Carolina during the regular season, and beat Gonzaga, Georgetown and Wisconsin during this tournament, you know they can go toe-to-toe with most anyone. And remember that this regional final is being played in Detroit, not in Omaha, the site of the sub-regional and a more “friendly” venue. Kansas has not been as much of a monster away from home as they have in the Allen Fieldhouse. We don’t want to disparage the Jayhawks at all, because they have superior balance, with athletes like Brandon Rush and Mario Chalmers who can get it done from the outside, and the inside people like Darrell Arthur. But Davidson has the go-to guy in Stephon Curry (34 ppg in tournament) that no one has been able to stop, and if Wisconsin’s Michael Flowers was not able to do it, we doubt Chalmers (or whoever it’s going to be) can succeed at that assignment. Of course, it’s not just Curry, but Jason Richards that should be a concern for the Kansas defense, because Richards dos quite a bit more playmaking than just dumping it off to Curry. And Davidson’s big people have played well enough to warrant attention. To free Curry up for his vaunted jump shots, Davidson will have to do a lot of screening, and that by definition will bring it into a deliberate half-court offense, which is going to test the Jayhawks’ patience a bit. We don’t know about an upset, but past experience has demonstrated that the Wildcats can make this a contest for the whole 40 minutes.
