eBookies.com: NCAA

Essentially when it comes to the NCAA we will be dealing with two sports in particular - college football and college basketball. Both are obviously extremely popular, and both present more than their fair share of betting opportunities. College football starts in late August/early September and runs right through January and the bowl season. College basketball begins in November and runs through "March Madness" and the Final Four, which concludes in the first days of April. That's a lot of action.

In college football there are certain handicapping considerations that are different than pro football because there is more of a disparity, from top to bottom, in the quality of the teams that compete at the Division I level. There are, therefore, higher pointspreads to negotiate. And there is also a wide range of styles of play, from the freewheeling, run 'n shoot-type passing attack to the triple option. This adds a different twist to the dynamic of the matchups, as well as a challenge for the handicapper.

Different styles also exist in college basketball. Some teams are very successful playing at a breakneck pace, while others prefer a much more deliberate style, slowing things to a crawl. Some live and die with the three-pointer, while others rely on an inside power game. Some coaches, like Bob Knight, employ man-to-man defense as a staple. Others utilize a number of variations of zone defense. It's a fascinating mix and makes for a fascinating handicapping challenge.

This becomes magnified when the 65-team NCAA tournament and the 32-team NIT get underway, and teams from schools of different sizes, from different conferences, with the different styles of play get together and create a veritable betting bonanza.

That's really what college basketball is. With over 300 teams in Division I, there are so many games to choose from in a given week that it's shame on you if you can't get into the action.

We'll help, with advice columns and regular handicapping selections.
