Major league baseball is an interesting betting experience, in that much of the handicapping equation revolves around the pitcher who takes the mound that day. MLB betting involves money lines. Generally, you are betting on the winner of the game. Baseball presents the novice bettor with perh apssome points of confusion, because there are actually different kinds of money lines that are utilized. We'll discuss some of this in its simplest form.
Let's take a basic "dime line" on baseball, for an example:
YANKEES -150
METS +140
In this game, the Yankees are favored by -150, which means you will be betting $150 to win $100. You are "laying" 150/100, or, reduced using lowest common denominators, 3/2. In the dime line there is a ten cent difference between what you would lay on the favorite and what you could "take back" on the underdog. So the Mets are a +140 underdog, which means for every $100 you bet you could win $140. You are getting 140/100, or 7/5.
A "twenty cent line" would look like this:
YANKEES -150
METS +130
Here the spread (which, in essence, represents the bookmaker's "vig") is twenty cents relative to a dollar, rather than ten cents. In this proposition you will get the Mets at +130, which means you will win $130 for every $100 wagered.
At times there is also a "run line" used. Generally speaking, when the sportsbook adds the run line to a game, it will make you give up a price with the team that is getting the run. If a run line was applied to the Yankees-Mets game, for example, it might look like this:
YANKEES -1.5 +120
METS +1.5 -130
Here, you would be laying a run and a half with the Yankees, but you would be paid off at +120, or 6/5, if you covered that run line. You can get a run and a half with the Mets, and you would obviously be hoping to win the game outright or get to within a run. For this privilege you would be laying -130.
Baseball wagering also features totals (over/unders), parlays, and special propositions, all of which we will eventually explore within these pages. Stay with us at eBookies and hopefully we will pump some life into your baseball handicapping!
